Knit to the Point

Long-Tail Cast On in Knitting

The most common method of casting on your knitting project is the long-tail cast on. It involves estimating the length of the “tail” before you starting casting on. A simple way to do so is to wrap your yarn around the needle ten times. Take that length and multiply it however many tens you need. For example, if you are going to cast on 64 stitches, wrap the yarn ten times and then fold over that same length of yarn six times, plus one more for the four stitches. I then usually add a bit more to allow for weaving in. For beginner knitters especially, a good rule of thumb is to cast on your stitches loosely, making it easier to knit your first row into those stitches a bit easier than if they were tight.
